Hi and welcome to MotherOfAllGeeks.com. I’m a SQL Server DBA who has been working with this technology since 2001. While studying I completed three internships in Technology which helped me get my foot in the door. I also worked part time for an auto-parts store on the helpesk all through my University days. I landed my first DBA gig as an entry level DBA for an actuarial firm in 2001. During my time there I worked on such things as migrating SQL Server 6.5 databases to SQL 2000, backup and recovery, automation of disk device scripting and learning quite a bit about SQL server architecture and internals.
Moving on a few years later to work in the Real Estate industry I was brought into a much smaller SQL Server Team. This gave me the opportunity to take hold of the SQL Server environment and put some standards around it. Security, installation and coding standards all needed to be documented, communicated and implemented. I also had the chance to learn Sysbase and Sysbase replication server.
The company went through some changes and I stayed with the firm but my role changed. I became a very project oriented DBA. Meaning I started to work with the Business Analysts on requirements gathering. I started to work on and develop data models for new projects, I develop and review all database code, I work closely with the enterprise architect in making technology decisions. Development, QA and Production maintenance always keep me busy as well.
Working with Microsoft’s SQL Server has not only provided a decent living but also provided me with lots of challenges. I’ve met countless number of talented people and that will continue I’m sure. So why the Blog? I have used the Internet countless times to help me troubleshoot issues. I figure its about time I put some of that knowledge back out there for others.
